The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is restoring Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) beginning January of 2019. OEP will take place from January 1st through March 31st.

OEP offers an opportunity for individuals to switch from one Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan to another, and it also allows for them to transfer back into original Medicare.

What type of changes can be made during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?
If you are currently enrolled in a Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can use OEP to sign up for a different MA Plan (with or without drug coverage). You can also use OEP to opt back into your Original Medicare Plan (with or without drug coverage).

What type of changes are NOT allowed during Medicare Open Enrollment Period?
If you are currently enrolled in Original Medicare, you cannot use this period to join a Medicare Advantage Plan or add/make changes to your Prescription Drug Plan. In addition, OEP is not available if you are enrolled in a Medicare Savings Accounts or a Medicare Cost Plan.

How many times can you change your plan during Medicare Open Enrollment Period?
You can only change your plan once during this period. This means that if you were to enroll in a new plan beginning January 1st, that you would not be able to move back to the plan you originally had. If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan and you are happy with your coverage, you do not need to take any action.
