Over-the-counter Covid-19 tests are quickly selling out at pharmacies all over the country. These tests make it possible to self-administer a Covid-19 test without the risk of exposing others or the need to wait in line at a testing facility. Currently, Original Medicare doesn’t cover these tests, but the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that in early spring of 2022, Medicare will cover up to eight free over-the-counter Covid-19 tests a month for Medicare Beneficiaries.

“Medicare will cover up to eight free over-the-counter Covid-19 tests a month for Medicare Beneficiaries.”

In order for the tests to be covered, they must be picked up at a pharmacy or facility that participates in this program. More information about eligible pharmacies and participating entities will be available in early spring.

This is not a reimbursement program! Since Medicare is paying these participating entities directly, you pay nothing at checkout for these over-the-counter tests.

Do you need free Covid-19 tests before this new program is enacted? Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order four free, at-home COVID-19 tests, delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. You can request four at-home tests for home delivery for free at covidtests.gov.
